A6IP Center Supports Tunisia's Readiness for Article 6 Implementation

On 2-3 September 2026, the Article 6 Implementation Partnership (A6IP) Center, together with the Ministry of Environment of Tunisia, conducted a two-day capacity-building workshop to advance the implementation of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement in Tunisia.

Tunisia recognizes Article 6 as an important tool for mobilizing finance and technology to achieve and enhance its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC). The country explicitly expressed its intention to participate in Article 6 mechanisms in its updated NDC. Effective participation in Article 6 cooperative approaches requires a comprehensive understanding of institutional arrangements, registry and tracking systems, legal frameworks, reporting requirements, and corresponding adjustment methodologies. The workshop focused on providing technical assistance in these areas, which remain key challenges for Article 6 implementation in Tunisia.

Representatives from relevant Tunisian government ministries participated in the workshop and discussed the importance of accelerating the development of decrees and other legal arrangements necessary for Article 6 authorization. Through the capacity-building sessions and technical discussions, participants reaffirmed that authorization is a critical step toward the issuance of Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs). The workshop helped strengthen understanding of the actions required to advance Tunisia's Article 6 readiness under the leadership of the Ministry of Environment.

The workshop also addressed technical aspects related to methodologies and registry systems. The JCM Implementation Agency (JCMA) joined the workshop online as a guest lecturer and delivered technical presentations on MRV methodologies, Article 6 tracking, and corresponding adjustments. These sessions enhanced participants' understanding of methodological requirements and the operation of JCM and ITMO registry systems, while facilitating knowledge sharing among focal points from different ministries.

Another important outcome of the workshop was the strengthening of networks among key stakeholders through face-to-face discussions and exchanges of experience.

Before, during, and after the workshop, the A6IP Center held bilateral meetings with key stakeholders to further strengthen its network within Tunisia's environmental and climate policy community. These discussions provided valuable insights into Tunisia's current progress on Article 6 implementation, as well as the challenges and opportunities ahead.
