Mongolia Issues Its First ITMOs for International Transfer Under Article 6.2
Mongolia has taken an important step in the implementation of cooperative approaches under Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement by initiatingthe international transfer of its first internationally transferred mitigation outcomes (ITMOs) under the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM). With this milestone,Mongolia becomes the fourth country to issue ITMOs under the Joint Crediting Mechanism and demonstrating continued progress in operationalizing international carbon market cooperation.
During the eighth meeting of the Mongolia–Japan Joint Committee for the JCM in June this year, the two countries decided to issue 214,040 JCM credits, equivalent to 214,040 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO₂e), for emission reductions generated by four renewable energy projects in Mongolia under the Paris Agreement. These emission reductions have been monitored, reported and verified since 2021.
Under the Joint Committee's decision, 127,476 credits were allocated to Mongolia and 86,564 credits to Japan. The credits allocated to Japan were authorized by Mongolia as its first ITMOs for international transfer under Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement.
Prior to the issuance of these ITMOs, Mongolia submitted its Initial Report under Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement. Through targeted technical assistance and capacity-building activities, the A6IP Center supported Mongolia in preparing the report and strengthening its readiness for implementing cooperative approaches under Article 6.2.
The Paris Agreement Article 6 Implementation Partnership (A6IP) Center remains committed to supporting Mongolia through technical assistance, capacity building and knowledge sharing as the country advances the implementation of cooperative approaches under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.
