
A6IP Center contributed to advancing high-integrity Article 6 implementation at SB 64 in Bonn, Germany
The Paris Agreement Article 6 Implementation Partnership (A6IP) Center participated in the UN Climate Change Conference (SB 64) held in Bonn, Germany. Bringing together Parties, international organizations, and stakeholders, SB 64 (8–18 June 2026) served as an important platform to advance both negotiations and practical implementation of the Paris Agreement.
Throughout the conference, the A6IP Center contributed to a range of events and discussions to strengthen international collaboration, enhancing technical readiness, and supporting high-integrity implementation of Article 6.
A6IP Center’s Key Activities at SB 64
Sharing Practical Experiences at the Article 6 Markets Day
The A6IP Center co-organized a session during the Article 6 Markets Day, convened by the UNFCCC secretariat and hosted by GIZ on 8 June. The session focused on international carbon markets under Article 6, where the A6IP Center shared experiences and lessons learnt supporting partner countries on strengthening Article 6 readiness and translating Article 6 into practical action.
Facilitating Peer-to-peer Exchange through the A6IP Country Experts Exchange
The A6IP Center organized the A6IP Country Experts Exchange (World Café) on 12 June, providing a space for open peer-to-peer discussions among national Article 6 experts from Partner Countries who completed the Article 6 Technical Expert Review (A6TER) process, to strengthen readiness for upcoming reporting cycles, address challenges in implementing A6TER recommendations, enhancing effective Article 6.2 implementation.
Contributing to the Article 6.2 Ambition Dialogue
The A6IP Center contributed to Day 2 of the Article 6.2 Ambition Dialogue on 13 June which focused on cooperative approach-level design considerations. During the session, Mr. Kazuhisa Koakutsu, Director of the A6IP Center, shared reflections on emerging technical design approaches and practical implementation experiences under Article 6.2, highlighting the importance of a facilitative, efficient, and implementation-focused Article 6 reporting and review process to enable Parties to focus on implementation and accelerating mitigation action.
Advancing capacity-building support to JCM Partner Countries
The A6IP Center also supported the JCM Global Partnership Meeting, led by the JCM Agency in collaboration with the Ministry of the Environment, Japan (MOEJ), and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). During this meeting on 10 June, the A6IP Center presented progress on implementation support provided to JCM Partner Countries, including:
- Supported over 20 Partner Countries in developing JCM Initial Reports, with 6 Initial Reports submitted in 2025.
- Supported 5 Partner Countries on the Article 6 Technical Expert Review (A6TER) process, and provided targeted assistance to the Maldives and Thailand for AEF development and submission.
Strengthened technical capacity of national Article 6 experts through dedicated training programs and online expert sessions.
Strengthening Partnerships for Capacity Building
Throughout SB 64, the A6IP Center engaged with partner countries, partner organizations, and other stakeholders to advance collaboration on Article 6 implementation and identify opportunities for further support to accelerate Article 6 implementation.
Looking Ahead to COP 31
The A6IP Center extends its appreciation to the UNFCCC secretariat, Parties, and partner organizations for their valuable engagement and contributions during SB 64. The discussions and exchanges in Bonn reinforced the importance of continued collaboration to accelerate Article 6 readiness and implementation, strengthen international carbon markets, and support effective climate action in the lead-up to COP 31 in Antalya, Türkiye.
