About
Vision
All Parties are able to enhance and implement ambitious nationally determined contributions (NDCs) through the use of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
Mission
Promoting inclusive global collaboration, knowledge sharing, and capacity building to implement high integrity carbon markets through Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.
Background
Article 6 of the Paris Agreement recognizes that Parties may pursue voluntary cooperation to achieve their NDCs. The implementation of market mechanisms under Article 6 is expected to stimulate carbon markets and private investment, contributing to economic growth and greenhouse gas mitigation. The development of institutional arrangements, eligible projects, and knowledge sharing will be key for successful implementation. To promote international collaboration for capacity building and address implementation challenges, the Ministry of the Environment, Japan, launched the Article 6 Implementation Partnership (A6IP). The A6IP Center, launched at the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) in Japan following the 2023 G7 Ministers’ Meeting on Climate, Energy, and the Environment in Sapporo, provides the A6IP secretariat services. As of January 2025, A6IP works with 86 partner countries and more than 100 organizations and private sector partners to promote institutional and technical capacity building to achieve best practices and enhance global collaboration.
