Luang Prabang, Lao PDR – The Paris Agreement’s ambitious goals took center stage at the “2nd Technical Workshop on Article 6 Implementation in Lao PDR” held recently in Luang Prabang. This collaborative effort, organized by the Article 6 Implementation (A6IP) Center, the UNFCCC Regional Collaboration Center (RCC) Asia and the Pacific, and the Department of Climate Change of Lao PDR, brought together key stakeholders to advance Lao PDR’s climate action journey.
With support from the Ministry of Environment Japan (MOEJ) and the Collaborative Instruments for Ambitious Climate Action (CiACA), the workshop provided a valuable platform for government officials to deepen their understanding of Article 6 implementation. This included a focus on ensuring robust and transparent accounting for emissions reductions through authorization and corresponding adjustments. Participants also explored the potential of market-based mechanisms to drive climate action under Article 6.4 (PACM) and learned from practical examples, including Thailand’s T-VER program under Article 6.2.
The workshop fostered dynamic discussions among participants from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE), other relevant ministries, and implementing partners such as Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). These discussions focused on identifying opportunities for Lao PDR to leverage Article 6 in its climate efforts by pinpointing potential mitigation activities. Additionally, participants collaboratively determined areas where further technical assistance can empower Lao PDR to effectively utilize Article 6.
This successful workshop marks a significant step forward in Lao PDR’s commitment to the Paris Agreement. By fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing, it paves the way for the country to unlock the full potential of Article 6 in achieving its climate ambitions.
