The first A6IP Advisory Group meeting convened on March 7th and 8th, 2024, in Hayama Town, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. A total of 48 participants, including 23 joining remotely, gathered from diverse corners of the globe, primarily comprising practitioners engaged with Article 6 of the Paris Agreement across various nations. The agenda centered on three key areas: (1) deliberating on A6IP’s initiatives and activity plans, (2) assessing the current status of Article 6 implementation and capacity building efforts within individual countries and organizations, and (3) exchanging insights on cooperation and strategies aimed at bolstering the effective implementation of Article 6.

2. Summary
(1) Session 1: Introduction to Article 6 Implementation Partnership
The A6IP Center provided an overview on the establishment of the Partnership, the purpose of the A6IP Advisory Group meeting, and the progress of developing the Article 6 Implementation Support Package tailored for each participating country.
(2) Session 2: Implementation and Capacity Building
International organizations offering capacity-building support for the implementation of Article 6, alongside countries in the process of establishing domestic frameworks for Article 6 implementation shared the status of Article 6 implementation, ongoing capacity-building efforts, best practices, and anticipated post-2024 activities.
(3) Session 3: Capacity building for implementing Article 6(2)
After the A6IP Center presented the participation requirements necessary for implementing Article 6(2), encompassing government-approved implementation structure and reporting protocols, the World Bank and Germany presented examples of their respective support program. In addition, the A6IP Center shared an example of capacity building support provided by the A6IP Center in Tunisia.
(4) Session 4: Capacity building for implementation of Article 6.4 mechanism
The A6IP Center outlined the prerequisites for the implementation of the Article 6.4 mechanism and discussed priority areas for capacity-building cooperation. Furthermore, insights from the UNFCCC Secretariat and a Senegalese expert were provided regarding prospects for future cooperation
(5) Session 5: Towards High Integrity Carbon Market and next NDC
The A6IP Center explained the importance of maintaining integrity across the supply, demand, and market side to realize a high-integrity carbon market in practice. Furthermore, it explained how Article 6 aligns with the NDC’s ambitions. It has been announced that a series of efforts towards High Integrity Carbon Markets will contribute to raising the ambition of the next NDC.
